Drop me a line...

Hello! to anyone who's reading this, please comment. I mean, not this post, it's a little dull; just in general. Comments are one of my very favourite things; they excite me. Since I suppose this post should be longer than this, I'm going to make a list of some of my other favourite things...
Gilmore Girls (the tv show)
www.thischarminggirl.com (the website)
Dark purple (the colour)
Frankie (the magazine)
Ella Enchanted (the book)
Mirror Mask (the movie)
Aladdin (the Disney cartoon)
Little Red (the band)
Jackie Cooper (the song)
Chocolate (the sweet thing)
Nectarines (the fruit)
Sweet potato (the vegetable)
Pistachios (the nut)

My favourite book...

Ella Enchanted is a Cinderella story with a twist. It's about a young girl (Ella) who at birth has a spell put on her. She must always be obedient. Although the fairy who enchanted her (Lucinda), views the spell as a gift, as you would imagine, it is nothing but a hindrance to poor Ella.
When Ella's mother passes away, her life takes a turn for the worse. she doesn't get on well with her selfish, ignorant father and she certainly doesn't get along with her new stepmother and stepsisters. What follows reflects the Disney version of Cinderella, but is much more fantastical. Elves, Ogres and Giants all grace the pages of this book, and you learn all about their languages (which Ella has a great interest in) and way of life. The spell introduces a whole other level of complications into Ella's life. She can't get too close to anyone without worrying that they'll find out about her secret and abuse it, and having a relationship with a prince is a threat to him, her and the whole kingdom.
I first read this story when I was around 10 or 11, so perhaps It's not as good as I feel it is. I've read it 4 times in total and I think it's a lovely story set in an exciting land filled with interesting characters, so try it out. Sorry if my love of this book is sickening you.

I love a happy reunion...

which is why I was so thrilled when I found out that the boys are back together! "Which boys?", I hear you ask. Why the M'n'M boys of course! Remember they split up and were sold in seperate colours? Tragic if you ask me. I mean, if you could tell what colour you were getting before you bought them, I'd be all for it (some chocolates just aren't meant to be together. Besides, I'm a sucker for brown M'nMs), but you can't! It's like some kind of riddle.
So things being as they were, I was ecstatic when I saw a heartfelt, touching add where a couple of fat, colourful chocolates sang to eachother in white suits. I was moved. Finally the meaning has been put back into my life. Finally I can sing, dance, rejoice. All because of the M'n'Ms.

Bellydancing is black magic...

Or at least that's what it becomes when I attempt it, which I have been forced to I'm my healthy lifestyles class. I'm never taking a sport class again. It's a serious health and safety hazard.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the dance. The woman who taught it to us was amazing, and actually made it look good. But then i gave it a shot and....well all I can say is that if I'd been on the street, someone would've thought I was having an epileptic fit.
So netball remains the only physical activity I really enjoy. I'm sorry, I gave it a stab. There are just some things i should never ever do.

And the nice ones lived happily ever after...

I've just been to see the middle school production of "Grimm Tales", adaptions of The Brother's Grimm's fairy tales (some of them anyway). Although I've already heard "Ashputtle", a very much more sinister version of "Cinderella", it never fails to make me shiver to the core.
For those of you who don't know this version, in it, when the evil stepsisters try on the slipper they cut their feet to bits to fit them in it. At the end of the story, two doves poke out the stepsisters eyes. Now, I know they were horrible, but shouldn't Ashputtle rise above their nasty ways instead of setting her pets on them?
Not to mention the fact that the Fairy Godmother in this version is actually Ashputtle's dead mother in tree form. It's spooky. It's frightening. Fairy tales were gory, gory things to begin with.

I didn't see this coming...

and yet I'm not surprised. Legally Blonde has been recreated as a musical, and it's hilarious. It is/was on Broadway, but it isn't in Australia yet (that was a hopeful "yet") so you'll have to watch it on you tube. It's all on there. My favourite songs in it would have to be "Ohmigod You Guys", "Positive" and "Gay or European". Get to it!

Love is a very loop-holed thing...

Apparently it is possible to like someone, have them like you, "do stuff" with them and be in a situation where you wouldn't "do stuff" with anyone else without being a couple. Hmm... See, it seems to me that what I've just described IS your basic teenage couple. So what does it mean if you choose not to slap the "couple" label on?
I asked one friend this and he said, "Well if one of them goes to hospital, the other isn't obligated to visit them.". Well I personally would say that agreeing only to "do stuff" with one person is more of a commitment than visiting them in hospital. There's a long list of people I'd visit in hospital and none of them are my boyfriend (I don't have one).
So doesn't a lack of label, of title mean nothing? I mean, I assume it's the fact that someone doesn't want to commit, but how does not using the term "couple" make a relationship less of a commitment? It doesn't! Commitmentphobes are weird...

These holidays...

Cat is off to Queensland! I'm very excited. I get to travel with my little sister on the plane and meet my aunt and uncle at the air port. Our parents aren't coming, which is very possibly the best bit. I've never travelled alone , any significant distance. I'll be in charge. Hehehe.
I can't wait. Beaches, warmeryness. I can't think of anything better! I've been to Queensland before. We (Mum, Dad, my sister and I) drove down one day during our 3 months in New South Wales. I don't remember it all that well.
Perhaps I'll have to learn many foreign cultures. Actually, an Irish cousin of mine travelled all around Australia and said that there were different things we say. Apparently putting but at the end of a sentence (eg. "She's really annoying but.") is common in Perth, whereas we Melbourne weirdo's say as at the end of sentences (eg. "It's cool as!"). i always thought everyone said that, but i was discussing it with a girl from England who I met in France and she was flummoxed ("Cool as what?!", she cried, "as what???").
So who really knows what kind of bizarre new things I'll pick up while away? I may come back a changed woman. That would be a tragedy!!! No more will I be a young innocent Melbournian, I'll be a worldly woman. I mean, sure I've done France, Ireland, Singapore and Spain. But my parents were there then. Now, think of the independence I'll have! Finally I'll be able put my plan into action. I mean... *cough*

Skill comes in all shapes and sizes...

So if you're really good at something commonly considered lame, does that make it any less impressive than being good at something popular? I certainly hope not, because i have a bit of a confession to make: I play the recorder.
I have been mocked beyond my pride, but I have persisted. Recorder is my skill, it's what I'm best at and I have to say, I enjoy it. I'm a total dork. But I've been playing for almost 10 years so I'm not too bad at it.
I suppose my point is that even though it isn't conceived this way, all skills are equal and we should acknowledge that...but there's no way I'm befriending that freak who plays the spoons!

My tips on stage fright and random stuff like that...

My good friend has returned home from a five week trip to New York, and he was much missed! I'm in a very good mood, but find myself quite out of blog ideas today, so I thought to myself, "Hey, just write!". Bad idea!
I had a solo singing performance this evening and as usual, it was good fun. I find the trick to beating stage fright is to realise that the audience is not there to critique you, they are there to enjoy and support you. No one turns up at a school singing concert thinking "Ahahaha I can't wait to boo Cat off stage", and if they do, then they have some issues of their own to sort out. So next time you perform, look at the audience and see not a scary crowd ready to laugh the moment you sing/ play the first note. see them for what they really are: a group of people who are for the most part kind and genuinely interested in hearing you. It's much less disgusting then imagining them naked.

If ever there was a website worth telling you about...

This wins. You know how great it feels to wear cute, unique, vintage-y jewellery? This is the place to go to buy that jewellery. i was just innocently flicking through "Frankie" when I found a small segment on this website: www.thischarminggirl.com. You know, if I hadn't been very bored one night, then I wouldn't have thought "Hum dum dee dum...I know! I'll look up the various websites recommended in 'Frankie'!"
But the good Lord smiled upon me, so there I sat, and came upon jewellery gold. Not literally, but...you know. Anyway, this was not a one night stand. Not a mere fling. This meant something. Something big, and now it has blossomed into a committed relationship. Even if you don't actually buy anything it's all beautiful, so just have a browse. The internet never looked so good!

Frankly Frankie...

is absolutely fabulous and epitomously deserving of a blog (if not a shrine). Frankie is my favourite magazine and covers fashion, art, music, craft and life. Unlike certain trashy teen mags (which i am also sadly addicted to), this has interesting stories and observations of life, pretty fashion and art as well as great music (it's how I was introduced to my favourite band, Little Red) without the patronising articles telling you what to do. That advice is always crappy anyway.
The articles are witty, well written and interesting and practically everything they advertise is awesome. Each bi-monthly issue comes with an art poster, by a different artist each time. I highly recommend you pick one up. it costs a few dollars more than Dolly or Girlfriend, but it's much better quality. i haven't made myself look like an idiot from a flirting tutorial in it yet!

Mara Mavis...

I'd like to dedicate this blog to my beautiful friend Mara, who has recently (ish) started a music myspace. She is an absolutely great singer and writer. Her lyrics have real meaning, and it is inspirational to me to listen to her music and seeing the way she's putting a piece of herself out in the world (which is actually one of the reasons I started a blog). She definitely deserves to be listened to, so check her out: www.myspace.com/maramavismusic

One thing I've learnt from NCIS...

is that to have eccentricities is almost a necessity when it comes to dealing with real stress. The team on NCIS have to investigate all these gory murders and suicides and tortures, and they're all strange. Gibbs and Ziva, both so serious, tough, strong; they learnt not to let their emotions interfere with their jobs. DiNozzo, who makes light, not of the crimes, but of his life outside them while he investigates. Detachment; child-like, almost.
And then there's McGee who, shall we say, "nerds it up" to a non personal level, also, a bit like DiNozzo, not attaching himself to what's happened personally. Last but not least, Abby and Ducky. Abby sees forensics as a puzzle to be solved, and I think Ducky has a similar mentality with working things out from the human body. You really couldn't work in those situations without some eccentricities, so embrace yours. You get a random impulse to shoot people on an hourly basis? The army is waiting!

I would throw salt over my shoulder but...

I really don't understand all that superstition stuff. Where did it come from? I mean, I suppose the horse shoe thing has some kind of logic behind it - the luck falls out-, but spilling salt? How is that bad luck? And how would throwing salt over your shoulder going to change that? Was there an insane outbreak of falls, bone breaks and deaths after horrible salt spills? Did someone say that they too had spilt salt, but for some reason threw some behind their shoulder afterwards and they were fine?
And walking under a ladder. Was some great power in the world just incredibly paranoid about ladders? I just don't see the sense. Some people really do have collections of good luck charms, but I don't have the time or energy. I mean I did have a pretty bad fall after spilling some salt at breakfast, walking under my dads ladder and holding a horse shoe the wrong way up after it randomly fell out of the sky, but I'm convinced it was a coincidence.
